mama memories

i remember many years ago my friend linda telling me about the sweet way her little one, leah would rub her back while she nursed. i think of this often when i am breastfeeding ewan. each week, day, feed, he has a new little approach to feeding. several weeks ago he went from a passive armed participant to providing me with a nice rub on my arm or my collarbone. his sweet message then evolved into a windshield wiper effect from shoulder to shoulder all the while diligently nursing.

now it is anyone's guess - sometimes a nice massage, sometimes a patting motion as if to demand faster service, other days it is a complicated pulling on the collar of my shirt or buttons on my sweater, sometimes i even get a dental inspection with his hand trying to explore my mouth - he is an awfully busy eater. the only guarantee is that if ewan is sleepy and approaching bedtime, the crazy arm movements eventually slow and his arms cover his eyes and he will drift peacefully off to sleep.

given the shenanigans described above, you can imagine that a discreet feeding in public is not easy to achieve. i was given a beautiful colorful cover as a shower gift before ewan was born. little did i know what vigorous excitement and glee those flowers would bring my little one as he fails to focus on the task at hand. when i wear the cover the hands go flying underneath - it is called a "hooter hider" but in ewan's case it does little hiding.

so when my dad came to visit us in march, i opted for a more serene blanket to serve as our privacy shield. although not as overstimulating - it was still distracting as then ewan's world became just him and me. i caught this moment with the camera on my phone. i love this picture - just ewan and his mama hiding under our special tent.

i must admit that despite all of its joys - the bonding, the health benefits, the money saving - breastfeeding is ALOT of work. especially for a working mom - all the pumping, the storage bottles, the freezing, the defrosting.

but, it is moments like this one that make it all worth while.
